6 June 10    E-mail

After two months of relative silence, June 5th saw Isha Home School once again burst in to life with the arrival of the students and their parents for the start of the 2010-11 academic year. After registering and completing all the necessary formalities the students entered their new houses with a great sense of excitement and anticipation.

For the Middle School, term started with a trek to the Vaibhav Shiva spot. The students were all eager to get to their destination and splash around in the water. Many of them tested their strength and tree climbing skills to great effect and a lot of fun was had playing group games such as 'Untie the knot', 'Up Down relay' and 'ABC Improvisation'. The new students took the opportunity to get to know each other while the older ones joyfully played handball and throwball. After a few hours activity all the children had worked up a healthy appetite, and very much enjoyed lunch at the beautiful location.

Overall, the students expressed a great sense of pleasure and really enjoyed the adventure into the forest.

From the Page to the Stage - IHS Middle School Students Explore Drama
3 April 10    E-mail

As part of exploring all aspects of theatre, this year the students embarked on an organic process we affectionately termed “Page to the Stage”. The first term was totally dedicated to story building. We started with literally nothing - a blank whiteboard. In the first few weeks the children were encouraged to throw any and all ideas at the board. Slowly but surely a story started taking shape. With every brainstorming session, new ideas were included while at the same time old ideas were discarded. Having Jivi Anna, a talented script writer, story teller, and documentary film maker who volunteered at the Home School for a year brought out a different quality in the children and gave them a deeper sensitivity to story building. This also meant that in time he was able to write a script based entirely on the children's ideas.

'Precious Earth' - Quiz
31 March 10    E-mail

This morning's assembly saw the finale of this years Precious Earth Quiz. The quiz has been a regular feature at Isha Home School for the past 2 years with monthly installments taking place throughout the second term. The Precious Earth Quiz originally started as an attempt to familiarise the children of IHS with recent developments in the areas of environment and ecology using articles from a wide range of daily newspapers. Given the overwhelming volume of 'negative' environmental news that we are exposed to, constantly reminding us of the mess we, as a race, have created and the dangerous path that this mess is leading us down, it is always a challenge as to how to balance this with some 'positive' news highlighting signs of change and hope for this precious earth of ours.

Series of Music Assemblies
27 March 10    E-mail

To mark the close of the term the music department presented a series of assemblies showcasing the accomplishments of music students this term. Hindustani students presented several types of compositions such as sargam, lakshan geet, taraana, and bandish in various raagas and taals. This was the very first time that the junior and senior students performed together on stage and they later shared that it was a very fun expereince for them.

Tabla students and their teacher, Shri Ranjith, presented a highly interactive and lively assembly in the form of a lecture cum demonstration. They played theka and qaida variations in Teen taal. The assembly closed with a enthralling perfomance of a complicated pattern by an advanced student in tandem with his teacher.
