IHS was the host institution for the 2-day ASISC Regional Athletic Meet 2016 which was held on 6th and 7th September. Thirty-five schools from across the state and 536 participants contended for the laurels.
Against a majestic mountainous backdrop and pristine cloudless sky, the opening ceremony set the stage for the ensuing competitions. It comprised of a march past of all the contenders, the unveiling of the Tricolour, a torch-lighting ceremony featuring Tamil Nadu’s best athletes and the recitation of the Athletes Oath. The Chief Guests, Mr. Senthil Ganesh, Educationist and Managing Trustee of RVS Group, and Mrs. Aparna Rajkumar, Sports Enthusiast and Basketball Commentator for Doordarshan Sports, hoisted the flag and declared the meet officially open. Mrs. Rajkumar’s opening speech was brief but insightful, in which she stated that sportsmanship precedes championship.
IHS put up a short cultural program featuring its school’s signature martial march past followed by a kalaripayattu demonstration by its senior most students.
Mr. Llewellyn Xavier, Principal of Samskara Academy, was the coordinator for this event. To ensure adherence to national standards, the event was conducted and managed by Mr. D. Srinivasan, Joint Secretary of the Coimbatore District Athletics Association (CDAA), who enlisted the support of students from Maruthi College of Physical Education.
Sadhguru attended the closing ceremony along with other notable luminaries, namely Mr. D.R.Kaarthikeyan – Former Special Director of the CBI and Director General of the National Human Rights Commission and Mr. Dhanraj Pillay – Former Captain of the Indian Hockey Team.
Several state records were broken, with a few athletes trumping their personal best. In the end, St. Jude’s Pubic School & Junior College reigned supreme, followed by Isha Home School.
