On Monday, July 4th, the 10th grade Independent Math students presented their projects to the IHS Math Department faculty. They had been working on these projects since they were in 9th grade. The eight young mathematicians presented their findings on the topics they had chosen – the mathematics of beehives, platonic solids, and asset management.
In the first presentation, the question in focus was ‘why are hexagons the optimal shape used in beehives?’ The students went on to provide a logical argument as to why hexagons are used instead of any other regular or irregular shape, thus proving that bees are mathematical geniuses. The next presentation was on the five types of platonic solids found in nature – the cube, the octahedron, the icosahedron, the tetrahedron, and the dodecahedron. The presentation detailed the properties of each solid and gave examples of where these figures are found in real life. The final presentation was on financial advising. Until exploring this topic, students did not know how much thought is actually put into giving recommendations on where to invest money
Each of the projects was very thorough and the concepts were well explained. It was particularly interesting to see the application of mathematics in real life.
