Environmental Installation Workshop with Alumnus Sahana Ramprakash

On 4th August, Senior School art students participated in a nature/environmental installation art workshop facilitated by Alumnus Sahana Ramprakash. Installation art refers to an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that often are site-specific. Environmental installations, in particular, are both ephemeral, or short-lived, and site-specific. Students were introduced to the works of Stuart Ian Frost, Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long. Sahana also shared images of some of her own installation pieces. Students then went into nature and attempted their own transient creations.

​Senior Students Stage The Musical (Mis)Adventures of Goopy and Bagha

On the 13th and 14th of August, the Senior School students staged The Musical (Mis)Adventures of Goopy and Bagha. The play, written by Mr. Daniel A. Kelin II, is based on an English translation of a short story written by the noted Bengali writer Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury. Incidentally, Upendrakishore’s grandson, the renowned film director Satyajit Ray, made it into a Bengali fantasy comedy film in 1969 entitled Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne. The story revolved around two characters – Goopy, a terrible singer, and Bagha, an equally horrific drummer – who are exiled to the forest on account of their cacophony. The duo dream of becoming court musicians and embark on a journey to meet the King, who they are certain will acknowledge their musical talent. Along the way, they encounter a number of curious characters and a host of hurdles. Students worked both on and off-stage, and the enthusiasm was palpable. The play was well-received and appreciated by the audience.

IHS Teams Tie for First Place at Game Jam Titans 2016 – Coimbatore

Eight IHS students participated in the Game Jam Titans regional competition held in Coimbatore on 12th August. Game Jam is a game development competition open to school students, sponsored by NASSCOM and MindBox India. Participants are given a theme seven days prior to the event day, based on which they need to develop a game relevant to the given theme. This year’s theme: rain and/ or money. The students divided into two teams. One team created a game based on the theme money, in which a player has to take on the role of a businessman and put up shops in a strategic manner to earn maximum profit. The other team opted for the theme rain, in which a player is a paper man escaping the perils of rain. As he is made from paper, he can transform into a paper airplane and other shapes as and when needed. Both teams tied for first, and they have been invited to attend the NASSCOM Game Development Conference happening in Hyderabad later this year.

BCCI President Visits IHS

On 16th July, Sadhguru brought a distinguished guest to IHS – Mr. Anurag Singh Thakur, the incumbent President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the apex cricketing body. Mr. Thakur, a cricketer-turned-politician, is a third-time elected Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, and the National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the elder son of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. Mr. Thakur briefly gave an introduction to himself and the path that he took to get into public service. The students then asked Mr. Thakur a few questions on a wide range of topics including cricket, politics and the future of India all of which he answered quite optimistically. Responding to queries, he went into details about how BCCI works. In response to the question on what people must do to make India great, Mr. Thakur spoke about the need for the young people to take charge and make things happen. When asked about the challenges he faced for being among the youngest parliamentarians, he responded by saying that there has been an increase in the number of young people stepping into the political arena, and added that future of the nation requires a transgenerational understanding. The session lasted for nearly an hour and left a lasting impression on many students.

Latin Ballroom Dance Performance

On the 9th of July, IHS was treated to a Latin ballroom dance performance by world-class competitive ballroom dancers from Lithuania. Dance coach Andrius Brikmanis, a former professional ballroom dancer, compered the show, taking all on a journey across the world. The dancers, Matas Lukašovas and Rugilė Monginaitė, left all spellbound as they effortlessly performed the cha cha cha, samba, paso doble, jive and rumba. The duo ranked No.2 in the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) Open that took place in Lviv – Ukraine on 28 May 2016 in the Adult Latin category. Andrius kept the audience on their toes between items, asking them to dance and get into the groove. The trio also conducted dance workshops for students across the school.
