Hindustani Workshop & Concert by Ustad Maqbool Hussain Khan and Zeeshan Khan

IHS had the pleasure of hosting Ustad Maqbool Hussain Khan and his son Zeeshan Khan on the 25th and 26th of June. Ustadji conducted a Hindustani workshop for interested Middle and Senior School students, and the duo performed on the 25th night with Zeeshan taking the lead. Ustadji is a traditional Hindustani classical singer who belongs to the illustrious Rampur-Sahaswan gharana. The gharana’s origins trace back to Ustad Mehboob Khan, the chief khayal singer in the royal court of Rampur State (in present Uttar Pradesh) and his son, the legendary Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan. Not only is he an A Grade artiste of All India Radio, but he also has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Zeeshan, who continues the tradition, is known for his experimentation and improvisation, and is the lead vocalist for Samved, a Mumbai-based folk fusion/electronica band. Students thoroughly enjoyed both the workshop and the concert.
