This term, students of class 7 and 8 participated in a 10-day language intensive workshop. Class 7 students went through a spoken Sanskrit workshop (Sanskritam Sambhashana Shibiram). Class 8 students had the option of choosing from Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil and French. Below are a few sharings from the various workshops.

I chose my 3rd language as French. Our teacher used the Total Physical Response (TPR) approach, which is based on the coordination of language and physical movement. He would give a command (i.e. sit, stand, walk, jump, etc.) in French, and we would respond with the corresponding action. Within a short period of time, we were able to learn new vocabulary. It was a lot of fun. Overall, everyone loved the workshop and I personally feel like I can go to Paris now!

- Anikait, Class 8
I never thought that by the end of 10 days I would know 236 letters and how to write in Tamil! Our teacher, Pollachi Nasan Anna, introduced us to a completely new method of learning how to read and write in Tamil, through the aid of thirty-two carefully crafted cards. I had an amazing experience, and I never knew language learning could be so effortless.

– Japjot, Class 8

Who speaks Sanskrit anyway? We began with just two phrases, “What is your name?”  and “My name is __” So, on it went. In the next few days, we learnt more and did many activities. By the end of 10-days, I acquired more than I had learnt in 3 years of weekly Sanskrit classes. We even presented a drama on the last day! I hope other students are also able to learn this ancient language.

– Pavan, Class 7

I had never imagined it would be so easy to learn so much Hindi in just 10 days. Our teachers focused on conversational Hindi. We effortlessly moved from learning simple words to constructing sentences. I don’t think I have ever had this much interest in learning another language.
